The weekend in review

So, back to Monday morning again. The day of doom. How many Mondays are there in the average life span. 3,744 by my reckoning although that will differ depending on gender.

So what did I get up to this weekend? A mixed bag really. Saturday morning we releaxed and had a nice breakfast whilst reading The Times. Very middle aged/classed. Hearts weren’t playing at home this week but I fancied some football nonetheless. I therefore decided to go and see my local non-league team Spartans. Not a bad experience actually. Three quid to get in with an extra pound for a full colour programme which was an interesting twist at non-league level. They seem quite an organised outfit. They managed a crowd of over 3,000 for a Scottish cup game last season so they have a sizeable enough following although to be honest it wasn’t in evidence at the weekend. I’d say that there was around 150 people at the most watching. City Park is a windswept, freezing football ground with no seating or terracing. I had to stand on a grass embankment to watch the match and by the end of 90 minutes I couldn’t feel my legs.

Half time came and I experienced the strangest thing I have ever encountered at a football match. You make a donation and you get a round of sandwiches and a mug of tea or coffee in a proper mug. Bizarre.

Sunday consisted of a visit to the hospital during the day, a viewing of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in the evening, before a residents meeting in our neighbours flat. Nothing much to report from that other than an interesting ghost story from my downstairs neighbour. Apparently her bedroom is haunted by the figures of two men in Edwardian clothing. The building we live in is over 200 hundred years old so I’m not surprised at the existence of ghosts. We’ve been freaked out a couple of times in our flat.

One day I returned from work and as I was taking my coat off I’d swear that a black shape flitted past the bedroom door and shot into the box room. My wife has also been ’spooked’ a couple of times while she has been in the shower. We have a glass door on the bathroom and she swears that a shadow has passed the door a couple of times when she has been getting ready for work in the morning and caused her to just about jump out of her skin.

I’m away to look up Arthur C. Clarkes phone number.
