We are The Mods

I’m knackered once again this morning. We stayed up waaaaay too late last night watching Quadrophenia. It’s a movie I’d only ever seen in small chunks as I’d ever had a chance to sit down and watch it from beginning to end before. It’s abso-fucking-lutely magical and is a who’s who of British Cinema. Phil Daniels, Ray Winstone, Timothy Spall, Leslie Ash, Toyah Wilcox and even (in ridiculously shiny suit), Sting !!!
This film came out when I was 8 years old and I remember how it spawned loads of mods, complete with scooters and fishtail parkas. I seem to remember vague fights between rival gangs as well, although I’m buggered if I can remember anyone being a rocker so it must have been rival groups of mods. It’s surreal looking back to imagine a small seaside town in the East of Scotland descending into miniature Brighton Beach rioting.
I’m not working today, thank God. I think I’d be unconscious at this stage if I’d had to get up at my usual 6.45am. I’m working this Sunday though which is a killer. I start at 7am, which will require a 6am Lazarus style effort to get myself out of bed. Pitch black, freezing and too early. Never mind.
It’s the cup game against the Hibbies tonight. I’ve got a feeling in my water that we’ll get gubbed. The return of John Collins to Easter Road has a prodigal son feeling about it and what better start for a prodigal son than to defeat your bitterest rivals. I’ll post an update tomorrow as to how we got on. I’ve decided not to go to the match this time, preferring to watch on TV. The thought of sitting freezing in the away end at Easter Road being abused by morons for 90 minutes does not appeal, never mind having to pay £25 for the (dis)pleasure.
