Big Bother/Kebab mishaps

Fuck me. The world has gone nuts about the latest series of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’. 14,000 complaints received at the last count which makes it the most complained about television programme in history. It is being discussed in both the UK and Indian parliaments.

Even more bizarrely, there are people out on the streets of India burning effigies of Big Brother producers. I’d like to have been a fly on the wall when they were making these, given that no one knows what the feckers look like. I suppose they just built a bog standard dummy and stuck a clapperboard in it’s hand or something. Madness.

Given the furore over the apparent racist bullying of Shilpa Shetty, I decided to tune in for the last couple of nights. To be fair, I’m struggling to see where exactly the racism occurs. Certainly Jade Goody’s mother was appalling but she is long gone, evicted over a week ago. The remaining girls seem more motivated by girlie jealousy of Shetty’s looks, fame and status more than the colour of her skin. If the newspapers are to be believed then there have certainly been some dubious remarks but they could just as easily have been made as a result of ignorance and rudeness as much as racism. Either way, the bullying is horrific and it should be dealt with.

I abhor racism in all forms but methinks there is an agenda behind this being blown all over the press. It’s surely no coincidence that viewing figures have exploded since the revelations were made. If it is racism then we’ll not need to punish the culprits. Their careers will be in tatters and they’ll likely never work again. I always had respect for Jade Goody in the sense that she is essentially thick, fairly grotesque looking and half-baked yet she has managed to carve a successful career in more than one industry on the back of a horrendous performance in the 3rd series of Big Brother proper. I think however that she has just brought her house of cards tumbling down and this may be the worst error of her career.

Interestingly enough, the question must be asked - can Jade Goody really be racist as she is of mixed race herself ?

Away from reality TV, I thought I’d recount a scary episode which occurred the other evening. Whilst eating a mixed kebab from my local Indian restaurant (takeaway) I ended up with a large chunk of Lamb stuck on it’s way down. Deciding to try and flush it down with half a pint of water, I got a terrible shock when I realised that I couldn’t get the water past the blockage and was effectively unable to breathe due to the water.

So, I brought the water back up and repeated this process many times. Worryingly, after an hour, many glasses of water and numerous attempts to be sick, I couldn’t get this piece of lamb to move either up OR down. It took a good hour before it went down of it’s own accord and I was on the verge of heading to accident and emergency. Moral of the story? Chew your food properly…….

On a side note, it’s only 16 days to the Marillion Weekend. All excited.

Endemol are laughing all the way to the bank! They’re viewing figures are way back up since this hit the papers. It’s publicity you just can’t buy!
