Scots of the Anarchic

I’m not entirely sure of what it means to be Scottish these days. Things seem to be heading in a different direction from that which I hoped. Nationalism is rearing it’s ugly head again.
Don’t get me wrong, I could understand nationalism in the old dark days of Thatcher and the Tories when Scotland was on her last legs with industry dying, the shipyards rusting and an extra year of the poll tax to pay. I can’t really understand it now. Scotland is booming. We have lost the chip from the shoulder to a great extent. We’ve seen the rise of ‘Cool Caledonia’ in music, arts and film. We have identity again but this time with the confidence of a fledgling nation within a strong union.
Or so I thought. However, the newspapers here are starting to scare me every day. When I read that the Tories are looking to ally themselves with Labour to fight off the Scottish Nationalists then I know we have a problem. I don’t know where you are reading this from but if it’s down south then perhaps you don’t realise exactly how close the nationalists are to wrestling power of the Holyrood parliament. If they manage it then they will hold a referendum on independence and I’m scared of the results.
Now I’m a democrat and obviously idealogically in favour of accepting the will of the people but I can tell you something for nothing now, my wife and I will need to get the fuck out of here as will many like us because we are both employed in financial services and without the connection to London we would become a financial backwater.
I think the reality of how bad it has become was the complete lack of regard for the 400th anniversary of the 1707 Act of Union which fell last month. I’m actually quite fearful that the nats will get in at the next election and they’ll start to drive us towards Europe and away from the UK. I’m proud to be both Scottish and British but don’t want to be one at the expense of the other.

It’s interesting to hear the story from a Scot! Down here the mood is more “if they want it let them have it,” but there is certainly resentment regarding scottish MPs being able to vote over English laws and of course Gordon Brown becoming PM. Mind you, can he do worse that Tony?
