Edinburgh Castle

Jay Kay the Jakey/Rock the nation

I was walking up Leith Walk this morning on my daily saunter into work and almost pissed myself laughing when I passed an old drunk (jakey as they are commonly known in Scotland). Now, passing a jakey on Leith Walk is hardly a novel occurrence. The street is a mile long and links Leith and Edinburgh city centre. 7 days a week it can be jakey central in some parts.

However, this particular wino was wearing a big felt ‘Jay Kay from Jamiroquai’ hat. A purple one. Jay Kay the Jakey. You couldn’t make it up.

Whilst pissing myself laughing at the Jakey, I was also listening to the Alice Cooper Breakfast Show on Planet Rock - www.planetrock.com. Brilliant. Three of my favourite things all joined together. Alice Cooper. Breakfast. Hard rock. Utterly superb. Alice is actually a good DJ. The station also has some other top DJ’s, most notably Scotland and formerly Marillions very own Fish who does the ‘Fish on Friday’ show.

I think I’m getting more metal as I get older. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not planning on growing my hair again or wearing all black, and I’m certainly not considering buying any jewellery from ‘Alchemy’. You know the type I mean. A pewter skull with a rose between it’s teeth. Not for me. However, I don’t think I’d have gone to Wembley to see Metallica 10 years ago but I’m going this July.

Vive la Metal revolution.
