About to be a dad/Spamalot

I’m starting to quite like these joint post titles. They have a nice ring to them and they also mean that I don’t have to make up my mind about which of two possible titles to use. I just combine them with the good old slash.

Anyway, as the title suggests I am well chuffed to announce that come October there will be an addition to our family. I am going to be a dad. I am so excited. It will be a real change of life but a welcome one. There’s not much more I can add just now as theres not really anything to see and it’s a few weeks until the baby starts kicking. However, my wife is almost 4 months pregnant and we’ve had our first scan. Everything looks like it’s going OK so we are well pleased.

Regarding the second half of the title, basically I am being bugged titless by Spam comments offering Viagra and Phentermine (whatever that is). For the foreseeable future I am operating on a registered user basis. i.e. you’ll need to register to post comments.

Sorry for my regular (and any new) visitors if that’s a hassle but hopefully it’s only a short term measure. Please don’t let it put you off commenting. I’ve tried installing a captcha crytograph extension to wordpress but basically it fell flat on it’s arse and didn’t display the image. I’ll try and install it again when I get a chance. Perhaps at the weekend.

In the meantime, you’ll find the link to register on the right hand side under ‘Administration’.

    Congrats on the baby :)
As for the spam. Have you got Akismet running? And even if you have, I recommend changing the wp-comments-post.php file to something like wpc.php and simply update your comments.php file under your theme to post that that instead. The wp-comments-post.php file is in the root by the way.

I’ve done this on my blog amongst other various changes and it’s worked quite well. I also changed the author name in the input name attribute so that any automated program would have the wrong post variable.

But Akismet is your first stop. I simply went further due to the bandwidth racking up on my site.
