A Tout Le Monde

It’s been a few days since my last post. I’m neglecting you all. I’ve also been applying for Polish citizenship. Only kidding…..

Nothing much has been happening really. I guess the baby is growing fine and a visible bump is quite reassuring for me as the father, given that I don’t have the benefit of feeling bodily changes etc etc. My mother has been knitting like mad and we have already been provided with a number of scarily tiny jackets and hats. Funnily enough, these bring home the enormity of the situation to us a lot more than the scan did. I think it’s the realisation of just how tiny, vulnerable and dependent this little soul will be.

In many ways for my family there is a bitter sweet edge to all of this. The recent loss of my grandfather is still raw. It’s hard to believe that a man who sat in an armchair for a large chunk of his later life without saying very much (although laughing and smiling a lot) could leave such a big hole but he has and the hole is enormous.

Probably the nicest aspect of the whole situation was that we had the chance to tell my grandfather about the baby whilst he was in the last days of his life. It was nice for him to know months before anyone else did. Time was short and it was important to me that he knew.

By the time I told him, he was beyond the point of being able to speak and was in constant pain. As soon as I told him though, he started to cry. Not a sobbing, wailing effort. Just tears calmly rolling down his cheeks. Upsetting at the time but strangely comforting now. The circle of life was suddenly apparent to both of us in that moment of extreme closeness on a Wednesday afternoon in February. Nothing more was said but the realisation that he would never meet my unborn child hit me like a freight train. An end and a beginning.

On a more upbeat note, I’ve spent ages this weekend just replaying the video for the new Megadeth single ‘A Tout Le Monde’, which can be found on their official website http://www.megadeth.com.

The more metalheaded amongst you will of course will know that ‘A Tout Le Monde’ was actually on the 1994 album ‘Youthanasia’. Well, it’s been re-recorded and released as a single in the form of a duet with an Italian female vocalist. The new version is a lot faster and it could quite possibly be the best rock song ever written. Check it out.

Ah babies! I can remember the day as if it were yesterday, Oct 28th 1985 my son Jamie was born. Thrust in to my arms by a bustling midwife at exactly 2.25pm…………Enjoy it all, it goes by so quickly!
Speaking of which , my son brought me a single by Metalica called “Breadfan”. He said it was brilliant and whoever wrote it was a genius. I tried to point out it was by a band called Budgie but he refused to accept this! In the end I dug out the original…..Now he loves it more than Metalica’s rendition.
