A goestay the bookshop the other day. Wanting to find a book ken dudes.
Did you like that? I’ve just finished reading “The Incredible Adam Spark” by Alan Bissett. What a rollercoaster ride of laughs, sadness and sheer chaos it was. After taking a bump on the head saving a ‘wean’ at Hallglen gala day (during an American Football match no less), Adam Spark discovers that he has superpowers. Could he be Falkirk’s first superhero?
The joy of the book is in the character of Adam himself. He clearly has learning difficulties. His parents are dead. His sole carer, his sister Jude is a lesbian and looking to pursue her own life outside of Adams world. He is a Queen fan, which is almost tragic in itself seeing as they are defunct and Freddie Mercury dead. Somehow however he can find happiness in the simplest things (weetos?).
Anyway, I’m not one for book reviews so I’ll wind it up. I just felt compelled to recommend it as my book of the year (having finished it last night). If you don’t mind books written in the Scots tongue and with a distinct lack of punctuation (plus the addition of Adam’s wandered comments) then buy it and read it. It’s superb.
