The weekend review

I’m going to to stop drinking. I can’t do it any more. I mean, I can lift the glass to my lips and drink but I can’t actually manage the next day. I always feel like I’ve been run over by a bus.

The above hangover was a result of an all day Saturday session where I went to see the Levellers in Prestonpans. Myself and 4 mates went down to the old hunting ground. The prodigal mob return so to speak. A few pints in the Dasher and the Johhnie Cope. Oh my lord. Old school urban deprivation drinking at it’s best.

So how were the Levellers? Magic. Always nice to hear “One Way”, “Hope Street”, “Fifteen Years” and so on. Hard to believe that a band who once headlined Glastonbury was playing in a muddy field in Prestonpans. They reeled off the hits in perfect fashion. They were excellent. It’s interesting to see how much they’ve aged over the last 15 years. They don’t half look like a bunch of ageing hippies.

I was actually hoping to see a lot more people who I went to school with. I was disappointed to say the least when I didn’t see many at all. I heard that some of them are now dead, which came as a bit of a shock with at least one those deaths as a result of suicide. Certainly makes you appreciate what you’ve got. We had a neb around my old school as well. It’s change tons. I was quite disappointed actually. I guess I’d always thought that it would remain the same but instead it’s all extended and various parts of it demolished, along with the memories.

Where did all this sentimentality come from? Must be my age.
