Cheerio Tony

Today marks the last full week of Tony Blair’s reign as Prime Minister. It’s been a turbulent decade, what with 9/11 and the Afghan and Iraq wars. Add to that the large number of British soldiers and Iraqi/Afghan civilians and it’s all a bit bleak to be honest. It remains to be seen how he will be remembered in the pages of history but I suspect it will be a mixed bag of good and bad.

Ten years ago I welcomed Tony Blair with open arms. The Tories had been in power since 1979 and in that time had systematically dismantled Scotland’s industry, pride and confidence. “There shall be a Scottish Parliament”. The opening line of the Scotland Act. I almost ran to the polling station on referendum day. Even now, when the whole thing has become slightly tarnished by sleaze (Henry McLeish), terrible mini-kilts in New York City (Jack McConnell) and rampant Nationalism (the current Administration), I am still proud of the parliament and it’s chief instigator, the late Donald Dewar.

I actually saw Donald Dewar in our office when I worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland. Coming out of the gents, dusting myself down, I was stunned to see the giant figure of Donald standing in an empty meeting room opposite me, helping himself to a selection of biscuits which he then stuffed into his oversize suit pockets, presumably for consumption at a later date. If I remember correctly they were mostly Bourbon Creams.

Anyway, there’s no real point to this rant other than I felt I should say Cheerio to Tony. It’s not all been bad mate. The funniest aspect for me is that in Gordon Brown we will have a Raith Rovers season ticket holder as Prime Minister.

As Kenneth Wolstenholme once said (embarrassingly for him) - “They’ll be dancing in the streets of Raith tonight”.

Donald Dewar now there’s a name I had not heard for a while. When thinking of Donald, I always thought of a man with a dewdrop on the end of his nose!
Yes goodbye to Tony, it’s been up and down.
I’m afraid I’m not looking forward to Gordan though, He worries me!
