Right now I’m angry. Yesterday afternoon, Islamic terrorists presumably linked to Al Qaeda drove a car bomb into the terminal at Glasgow airport. Thankfully due to their inept planning and bravery by police and members of the public, nobody was killed. Watching the drama unfold on TV was horrific. This wasn’t New York or London where we’ve seen it so often before. This was Glasgow.
Later reports filtering in were more sinister. The hospital where one of the injured suicide bombers was taken was evacuated after it transpired he was wearing a suicide belt. I reiterate again, in case the enormity of it didn’t sink in the first time around. In Glasgow.
The stories coming out of eye witnesses are like something out of a movie. Guys on fire from head to toe, attacking police and shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ in the car park at Glasgow airport. Glasgow fucking airport. Not 50 miles from where I sit. Terrorism has come to Scotland for the first time since 1988. Even then, the crashing of a deliberately exploded jumbo jet over the small border town of Lockerbie which resulted in the death of 290 odd people was not in the plan. It was timed to detonate over the sea but delays meant that it went off over Lockerbie. Yesterday however sees the first time in living memory that terrorism has targetted Scotland deliberately. And what a mistake they have made.
If these people thing we are going to submit to their will they are wrong. This country has been through two world wars. More Scots soldiers died per head of the population in the first world war than any of the other home countries. We fight for what we believe in. This is not a country which can be bullied into submission.
