I didn’t think this week was going to end to be honest. It’s always the same when you’ve a ‘jolly’ at the end of it.

Myself and three mates are off to London for the weekend to see Metallica at Wembley Stadium. Heavy metal heaven. Once we jump on that train tomorrow, the weekend will begin. I’m not without my reservations. It will be the first time I’ve left my wife alone since she’s been pregnant. I can’t say I’m not worried because I am.

We are staying in central London and travelling from Glasgow on the second anniversary of the 7/7 terrorist attacks. Great. The two cities recently targetted and the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on the UK in recent memory. Oh well. My mate travels into Glasgow Central station every day and he says it’s crawling with Police with machine guns which is quite reassuring. That’s the way to deal with these pricks. Shoot first, ask questions later.

Gig should be good. I’ve only been in Wembley once as a young boy. It was the old Wembley then of course and for me it was symbolic of Scotland beating England in all those wonderful home nations matches which used to take place before all the crowd trouble. I remember as a boy being out playing in the local park or up the woods on summer Saturday afternoons and sprinting home on watch the likes of Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness work their genius on a nervy England defence. King Kenny putting it through Ray Clemence’s legs and turning away, smiling to the camera. Halcyon days. Fans dressed like Bay City Rollers rejects, drinking Tartan Special and dancing in the Trafalgar Square fountain.

So, to summarise. Metallica. Magic. Beating England on their home turf at football. Magic.

See you after the gig. Whiplash.
