I decided to cycle into work today. Having not used the bike in months, this early morning decision resulted in me sitting in my boxers pumping up the tyres of the bike at 7 am this morning.

Cycling to work requires a great deal more concentration than walking. There are not usually that many buses or articulated lorries on the pavement as a general rule. The road is a dangerous place so I had to be Timmy Mallett Wide Awake this morning.

The trip actually started off fine. For about 100 yards. Then I remembered, or more to the point my thighs, heart and lungs remembered, exactly how much of a bitch of a hill Leith Walk is. It’s also a bit of a cheeky monkey of a hill. Just when you reach the top and think you’ve conquered it, it goes flat for a bit then climbs again. By the time I got into work I was cream crackered. And that’s where the fun really started.

Having put the bike in our office cellar, I did not notice that the cellar was fairly muddy. I then proceeded to drag this mud through all of the office carpets. Hands and knees. Cloth. It’s definitely Monday.
