Six years on

It’s hard to believe that it’s 6 years since September 11th. I remember it like it was just weeks ago. I was sitting at my desk in work when my mother who was on holiday from work called to tell me that a plane flew into the World Trade Center. As she was on the phone to me, the second plane hit the building. We knew then that it was no freak accident.

A TV was set up in the office stairwell and we watched with horror as the events unfolded, culminating in the collapse of both towers. There was silence for about 10 minutes after the second tower fell. No one in the stairwell spoke. I rushed home and watched the whole thing over and over again on Sky News in disbelief. The western world had been attacked in spectacular fashion and I was pissed mad and angry. I am a great believer in western democracy and freedom after all.

Since then, the world has changed dramatically and not for the better. Both the US and UK have become bogged down in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our ‘liberation’ of Iraq has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands more innocent civilians than died on September 11th. Presumably Mr Bush thinks that this is OK because they are little brown civilians. What started out as shock and horror at September 11th turned into revulsion as Bush and Blair used it as an excuse to remove thorns from their sides and secure the oil.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for getting rid of mad religous nuts like Al Qaeda as I have said before. I’m more concerned with the rising death toll of civilians - and most notably children - in Iraq. Does September 11th justify this? I find it hard to believe that Saddam Hussein was so much of a threat to us. I certainly never felt threatened by him. It smacks of an invasion for oil and a kangaroo court to convict him.

Disillusioned is the word I’d use. What a difference 6 years make.
